Sergio Antonio Bravo Escobar was born in Ovalle on July 22, 1953, where he went to elementary school. He completed secondary school in the Internado Nacional Barros Arana in Santiago.

He was admitted to the University of Chile (Temuco Campus) to study to become a Chemical Laboratory Technician. Later, he undertook graduate studies at the Universidad Austral de Chile, where he received his Master’s in Dairy Science and Technology. He also did a Diploma in Business Management at the same university.

He came to work at the Universidad de La Frontera in 1975: first as a laboratory assistant and later as an academic. During his tenure at this Institution, he has held several appointments, including Coordinator of the Chemical Laboratory Technician Program, Coordinator of the Food Engineering Program, and Director of the Agribusiness Institute.

In 2000 he became part of the University’s Central Administration as the Vice-Rector of Administration and Finances, and in 2002 he became the Rector of the Universidad de La Frontera, having been re-elected twice, in 2006 and 2010. He is currently in his third term as Rector until 2018 .

Academically, he is an Associate Professor (A) in the Department of Chemical Engineering and teaches courses related to food industry processes. His area of research is Food Biotechnology, and he has participated as the director and co-investigator of FONDEF and FONDECYT projects, among others, with results that have been presented at various national and international conferences, as well as in several publications in indexed journals.

In the field of higher education, he has participated in several Ministry of Education or inter-ministerial committees. He was a member of the Presidential Advisory Council on Higher Education during his previous tenure and President of the Association of Regional Universities (AUR) from 2006 to 2009.

On the Council of Rectors of Chilean Universities, he is currently part of the Teaching Committee, the Committee on Financing and University Policies, and the Committee on Science, Technology and Innovation. He is also a member of the Governing Board of the Consortium of State Universities of Chile.
