Program Information

A Civil Engineer in Biotechnology, trained at the Universidad de La Frontera, is a professional with the skills to work in the fields of production processes, industrial biotechnology, and in projects and the management of production systems, which use biological systems, organic matter, and/or living organisms and their derivatives, thus contributing to the economic and social development of the country.

One of the graduate’s main characteristics is the strong capacity for innovation and social responsibility in engineering design. He/She is trained in basic sciences and engineering sciences, and specialized in the design, monitoring, and operation of bioprocesses and the use of biotechnological tools to solve industrial problems. The graduate’s training allows him/her to develop processes that use cellular systems, scale and select equipment, evaluate the operation of complex systems, and propose solutions related to his/her field of specialization. The management training allows him/her to collaborate in the formulation, evaluation, leadership, and monitoring of biotechnological projects, and in the management and administration of human and material resources.

The graduate can communicate in a globalized world, work in a team or alone, learn autonomously, and apply new knowledge, being aware of the ethical responsibilities of the profession.

The training allows him/her to work in industries that use cellular processes for the production of goods and services; in public or private service, research and education organizations; or self-employed.

Occupational field

A Civil Engineer in Biotechnology, who graduated from the Universidad de La Frontera, is qualified to work:

• In all types of labor markets related to the use of biological systems, living organisms and their derivatives or components for the production of products required by the market;
• In the productive industrial sector, particularly in process industries whose production systems involve the use of living organisms and their derivatives or components;
• In engineering consultancy firms in their field of specialization;
• In senior management activities in the public and private sector;
• Self-employed, as an entrepreneur, consultant or advisor in the corresponding field of knowledge.

*Students who enrolled in the Civil Engineering Common Plan or any other Civil Engineering Program of UFRO in the admission process 2024 must complete all first-year subjects, without the option of subject recognition or validation, to ensure compliance with the new graduate profiles and updated curricula.
